Pocket spring mattress: yes or no?

The pocket spring mattress is present in many German bedrooms and has enjoyed great popularity for years. However, the properties of this type of mattress are not suitable for everyone. Before you decide on a pocket spring mattress and it subsequently does not meet your needs, you should find out enough about this type of mattress in advance. For this reason, we present the advantages and disadvantages of a pocket spring mattress so that you can carefully consider whether this type of mattress suits you or not.

The most important thing in brief

Pros:

    • Allergy sufferers and heavy sweaters benefit from the dry sleeping environment and good air circulation of a pocket spring mattress: This allows heat and moisture to escape to the outside immediately, so that no mold can form and mites cannot settle.
    • Thanks to the high point elasticity, a pocket spring mattress adapts optimally to your body.
    • Pocket spring mattresses are particularly durable and dimensionally stable, so that no sagging can occur.
    • Pocket spring mattresses do not make any noise and are therefore ideal for noise-sensitive and/or active sleepers.

Cons:

    • Due to the good ventilation, a pocket spring mattress feels rather cool and is therefore less suitable for people who get cold quickly.
    • Compared to cold foam mattresses, pocket spring mattresses are not as easy to transport because they are more difficult to bend or roll due to the rigid spring core.
    • Adjustable or electric slatted frames are only suitable for pocket spring mattresses to a limited extent because they are not very flexible due to the mattress core made of springs. Consequently, height adjustment on the slatted frame is only possible to a limited extent.

Advantages of a pocket spring mattress

Pocket spring mattresses have a core of steel springs inside. Each individual spring is located in a fabric pocket. All springs are separated from each other, as they are sewn into the pockets and therefore completely encased in the fabric. The entire spring core – including the fabric pockets – is surrounded by various layers to ensure that the springs are adequately protected and not noticeable when sleeping. Because there is enough space between the pocket springs, the mattress is well ventilated. In this way, heat and moisture generated during sweating are immediately transported to the outside, so that pocket spring mattresses are characterized by good temperature regulation and a dry, cool sleeping climate. This type of spring mattress is therefore ideal for people who sweat a lot at night. Allergy sufferers also benefit from the good air circulation of a pocket spring mattress, as it prevents the formation of mold and the development of mites.

Thanks to the fabric pockets that separate the individual springs, a pocket spring mattress has high point elasticity: For this reason, this type of spring mattress only yields in the areas where pressure is applied. This is much better for your body, as it allows your shoulders and hips to sink in optimally when sleeping on your side. Furthermore, pocket spring mattresses last longer than other mattresses because they immediately return to their original state as soon as pressure is removed from a point. This dimensional stability also prevents the formation of sagging areas.

In addition, the steel springs of pocket spring mattresses do not squeak, making this type of mattress particularly silent and therefore perfect for noise-sensitive or active sleepers who move a lot in their sleep.

Disadvantages of a pocket spring mattress

Since pocket spring mattresses are so well ventilated, they are only suitable to a limited extent for people who get cold quickly. Furthermore, pocket spring mattresses are more difficult to transport than, for example, cold foam mattresses: The spring core inside a pocket spring mattress may only be folded or rolled up when vacuum-packed, as otherwise the springs could be damaged. We therefore advise you to always transport once unpacked pocket spring mattresses as a whole in order to prevent possible damage to the steel springs.

The same applies to adjustable or electric slatted frames: Since it is best for a pocket spring mattress to be in a horizontal position due to the inflexible spring core, rigid slatted frames are better suited for such mattresses. To prevent the steel springs from being bent too much, height adjustment on adjustable slatted frames can only be used to a limited extent.

Good to know:
Strictly speaking, pocket spring mattresses belong to the group of spring mattresses, but the two terms are often used synonymously. Furthermore, pocket spring mattresses can also be referred to as barrel pocket spring mattresses, as the same bulbous steel springs are installed in the core of pocket spring mattresses as in barrel pocket spring mattresses. Consequently, the advantages and disadvantages of pocket spring mattresses described here are also applicable to spring mattresses and barrel pocket spring mattresses.
