Pocket Spring Mattresses for Seniors – What to Consider When Buying

A person spends several hours in bed every day – and as we get older, we spend even more time in bed. Therefore, especially for seniors who are bedridden or in need of care, it is important to find a suitable mattress that meets their specific needs. For this reason, we will tell you what you should pay particular attention to when buying a mattress for seniors and whether pocket spring mattresses are suitable for seniors.

The most important things in brief:
  • To prevent pressure sores, make sure the mattress provides you with the best possible relief: Since a pocket spring mattress adapts precisely to your body, you will be optimally supported. Consequently, this type of mattress is perfect for seniors.
  • A mattress for seniors should be neither too soft nor too hard, because otherwise areas of the body will either sag or the pressure on certain points will be so great that blood circulation is impaired. Since you can choose different firmness levels with pocket spring mattresses, you will easily find a suitable model.
  • Motorized bed frames and adjustable slatted frames are particularly practical for seniors because they allow the lying position to be changed. However, pocket spring mattresses are only suitable for this to a limited extent: Due to the rigid spring core, they are rather inflexible, so that height adjustment only works to a limited extent.
  • Pocket spring mattresses have excellent hygiene, which can be further enhanced by additional mattress toppers, such as an incontinence pad.
🛒 Product recommendation:

Our 7-zone pocket spring mattress has a premium height of 25 cm to make it easier for you to get in and out of bed. Thanks to its 480 or 1000 springs per 2 m², it ensures ideal adaptability and only gives way at the points that are actually stressed. This prevents possible pressure sores. Our pocket spring mattress is particularly hygienic because it has optimal ventilation and mites cannot settle in this way. Take advantage of our offer to test the mattress at home in your own bed for 100 nights. If the mattress does not suit you and your sleeping habits, you can of course send it back to us free of charge! In addition to the pocket spring mattress, we also offer a rigid slatted frame, which is ideal for this type of mattress, as this prevents the springs from being damaged.

Are pocket spring mattresses suitable for seniors?

Especially when your mobility is restricted and you spend several hours in bed both during the day and at night, sufficient pressure relief is of utmost importance. If the mattress does not support you optimally, there is a risk that you will develop pressure sores over time: A so-called pressure ulcer develops when a part of the body is stressed for too long and is therefore no longer sufficiently supplied with blood. In the worst case, this can lead to skin and tissue damage. Since pocket spring mattresses have high point elasticity and adapt perfectly to your body, a possible pressure sore and excessive pressure load are prevented: While shoulders and hips sink further into a pocket spring mattress, the surrounding areas are optimally supported, so that a healthy body posture is promoted and the spine is in a straight position.

👍 Tip:

As you get older, getting out of bed becomes much more difficult than in your younger years. To make getting in and out of bed more comfortable for you, we recommend a mattress with a comfort height of 20-30 cm. It is much easier to get up from higher mattresses than from conventional mattresses with a thickness of 16-20 cm. However, before you buy a mattress with a premium height, you should check in advance whether your bed is suitable for such a mattress. Some beds are only designed for standard heights.

The degree of firmness also contributes to adequate blood circulation: Although many people, especially in old age, prefer to sleep soft, a harder mattress is often an advantage because the mattress adapts better to your body and no areas of the body sag. However, a mattress should not be too hard either, otherwise blood circulation at the respective pressure points can also be impaired. Your body weight and your subjective preferences also play an important role in the decision regarding the degree of firmness. When buying a mattress, however, make sure first and foremost that you are optimally supported and that the mattress is adaptable. Only then should you consider your personal well-being. Since the degrees of firmness can be freely selected for pocket spring mattresses – as with other types of mattresses – you are sure to find a suitable model that meets your needs.

Seniors often have nursing beds with a motorized bed frame or adjustable or electric slatted frame. If you are particularly bedridden, this can be an advantage because you have the option of positioning yourself differently: For example, you can raise your feet with an adjustable foot section or adjust the head section for watching television. Such changed positions or height adjustments also prevent pressure sores, as this changes the pressure load on the various areas of the body and other areas are then more or less stressed than before. However, pocket spring mattresses are only suitable to a limited extent for motorized bed frames, adjustable or electric slatted frames: Since they have a rigid core made of springs, they are difficult to bend or kink. With regard to adjustable slatted frames or motorized frames, this means that the positions can only be changed to a limited extent in order not to impair the spring core. The best way to use a pocket spring mattress is with a non-adjustable slatted frame.

Sufficient hygiene is also important when it comes to mattresses for seniors: Since pocket spring mattresses have good ventilation, there is a cool and, above all, dry sleeping climate. This makes it impossible for mold to form. Mites also cannot settle in because they prefer a damp environment. Due to the air circulation, hardly any heat is stored in the mattress and moisture that occurs during night sweats is immediately released to the outside. Consequently, pocket spring mattresses are particularly hygienic and therefore ideally suited for seniors. Corresponding mattress toppers also ensure adequate hygiene and prevent contamination: For example, there are special incontinence pads that prevent liquid from penetrating the mattress. These are removable and washable, making them easy to clean.

💬 Note:

The term "pocket spring mattress" is often used synonymously for spring mattress or barrel pocket spring mattress.
