Are pocket spring mattresses suitable for allergy sufferers?

Pocket spring mattresses are ideal for allergy sufferers as they are characterized by optimum hygiene, as this type of mattress is particularly well ventilated. This is due to their structure: the springs in the mattress core are individually packed in fabric pockets and there are several protective and padding layers around them. Air can circulate perfectly between the individual pocket springs, making the mattress particularly breathable: In this way, heat and moisture from night sweats are transported directly to the outside. This results in a cool and dry sleeping climate, which is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers as it prevents mold from forming. It also prevents mites from nesting, as they prefer a damp environment.

👍 Tip:

To further increase the breathability of the mattress, we recommend using a slatted frame as a base and not placing the mattress on a rigid surface. If you place the mattress directly on the floor, for example, it will not be sufficiently ventilated and mold can quickly form. With a slatted base, on the other hand, air, heat and moisture can escape better, which also contributes to a cool and hygienic sleeping environment.

Mattresses for allergy sufferers - what you need to consider

House dust mites feed on skin flakes and can be found in various textiles: Mattresses in particular provide a good breeding ground for the little creatures, as they are particularly warm and damp - perfect for mites. However, those who suffer from a house dust allergy are not directly allergic to the mites themselves, but to their droppings: This mixes with the normal house dust, is transported further and then enters the respiratory tract.

To avoid this, antibacterial intermediate covers (encasings) are available for your mattress and bed linen: These are pulled over the mattress, pillow and comforter. The actual bed linen is then placed on top. This prevents house dust allergy sufferers from coming into contact with mites or mite excrement, as these protective covers retain even the smallest allergens. In addition, the little animals cannot be stirred up in this way, but remain safely under the cover. Make sure that the encasings are air-permeable and breathable so that moisture that occurs during night sweating can escape. Otherwise, the mite problem may even get worse. Closed bed bases can also increase mite infestation, as this restricts air circulation and prevents moisture from escaping.

👍 Tip:

You should also refrain from using carpets in the bedroom, as they are perfect for catching dust and are therefore the ideal home for mites.

When buying a mattress for allergy sufferers, always pay attention to which materials have been used in it. We advise you to avoid fillings such as coconut fiber or straw in order to avoid possible allergic reactions in advance. Certain mattress covers are also unsuitable for allergy sufferers: Avoid covers that contain horsehair or virgin sheep's wool if you are allergic to animal hair. If you suffer from a house dust mite allergy, such fabrics are also not recommended, as mites like to nest in animal materials. Instead, we recommend mattress covers made of polyester, cotton or Tencel. To ensure excellent hygiene and prevent mold and mite infestation, you should choose a mattress with a washable cover that is easy to remove.

To ensure that your mattress remains hygienic and can be used over a long period of time, you should air it out regularly. The best way to do this is to place the mattress upright for a few hours so that the underside in particular is ventilated. It is best to place the mattress outside in the sun for a short time in the morning, as cold and UV light in particular kill mites. In addition, the mattress should be aired for about 20 minutes every day after getting up: To do this, put the bed linen to one side so that the moisture from the night can escape. The bedding itself should also be aired out and changed regularly. To further improve hygiene, you can also wash your comforter and pillow on occasion.

You should also ventilate your bedroom well: We recommend airing the room two to three times a day - even in winter. As a general rule, the room temperature in the bedroom should be around 18 degrees and the room itself should have a rather dry sleeping climate with a maximum humidity of 40 to 60 percent.
