What you need to know about baby mattresses
Just like mattresses for adults, baby mattresses are regularly tested for harmful substances: When buying a Baby Mattress , look out for the relevant quality seals and test results so that you can be sure that the mattress is free of harmful substances. If this is not the case, it can have serious consequences, as we - including small children - spend several hours in bed every day. In addition, you should never buy a second-hand Baby Mattress, but definitely buy a new one: Second-hand baby mattresses could already have been infected with fungal spores or other germs and therefore be harmful to your child's health. New mattresses, on the other hand, usually smell a little unpleasant at first, but the smell disappears after the mattress has been aired out for a good 24 hours. Although mold, fungi and other germs can also form in new baby mattresses due to moisture (e.g. from sweat or urine), this can be prevented with the help of a moisture-regulating mattress: Such a mattress can wick moisture directly to the outside so that it does not accumulate inside the mattress. A removable, washable mattress cover also ensures adequate hygiene in a baby's bed.
| 👍 Tip:
Mattresses for babies should ideally be equipped with a so-called edge support. This is located on the edge of the mattress and ensures that your child's foot does not get caught between the mattress and the bars of the crib. This can happen very quickly as soon as your child starts to stand up and romp around in bed. |
Sleeping babies in a prone position in particular is always associated with a certain risk factor, as this can cause the child's exhaled air to accumulate near the head so that it can be inhaled again. So make sure that the Baby Mattress has good air permeability and breathability. This prevents possibleCO2 rebreathing, which can even be life-threatening for small children. It has been suspected for some time that CO2 rebreathing can be the cause of sudden infant death syndrome. However, this risk can be largely averted with a mattress that allows good air circulation. To prevent your child's head from sinking too far into the mattress, which would also make it more difficult for air to circulate, the Baby Mattress you choose should be rather firm. Although there are no hardness levels for infants as there are for adult mattresses, the rule of thumb is that your baby should not sink more than 2-3 cm into the mattress.
Baby mattresses are usually available in sizes 60×120 cm and 70×140 cm and are suitable for toddlers up to the age of 4 years. After that, you should switch to a children's mattress. The height of the Baby Mattress depends on how long you want to use the mattress for your child, because the taller or heavier your child gets, the thicker the Baby Mattress should be. We recommend that you choose a mattress with a height of 7 to 13 cm, as this is suitable for your baby for a longer period of time. When buying a Baby Mattress , however, avoid fillings such as horsehair or coconut fiber, as your child could have an allergic reaction to these.
