Care of down pillows and duvets
A down pillow is wonderfully soft and supportive at the same time – and with proper care it remains fluffy, hygienic and comfortable for years. A down comforter needs a little more care than synthetic comforters, but with proper treatment it remains cuddly, light and warm for years.
With our step-by-step instructions, you can ensure that your down product retains its quality for a long time:
1. Daily care – for freshness and volume
- Shake up daily
→ distributes the filling evenly, maintains the volume and ensures air supply - Regular ventilation
→ keeps the down dry – ideal with the window open, but preferably not in direct sunlight, as heat can damage the down structure - No heavy throws on the pillows and blankets
→ this traps moisture and can lead to a loss of loft
2. Washing – only when necessary, but thoroughly
Washing frequency:
→ Pillows: Every 6–12 months is usually sufficient
→ Blankets: Every 1-2 years is usually enough
→ More often if heavily used or if you have allergies
Washing temperature:
→ Washable at up to 60 °C
Detergent:
→ Use down detergent – protects the natural oils of the down
→ No fabric softener! – it causes the down to stick together and impairs the quality
Washing machine:
→ Large drum – at least 6–7 kg capacity
→ Gentle cycle or special program for down
3. Spin-drying – with care
- 800–1000 rpm
- Spin 2 – 3 times with short breaks in between if necessary
→ this allows the water to escape without damaging the down
4. Drying – thoroughly & gently
- Drying with down or gentle drying program
- Tennis balls or dryer balls in the drum
→ prevents clumping and loosens the filling - Drying time: can take several hours – the pillow or blanket must be completely dry to avoid mold
- Air drying is only recommended to a limited extent
→ Risk of mold if the down does not dry completely
5. Storage when not in use
- Dry and airy
- preferably in a breathable fabric bag (e.g. cotton)
- No airtight plastic bags – moisture can build up here
Additional tip:
If you don't trust yourself to wash them at home:
Professional cleaning of bed feathers or a good dry cleaner with experience in down is a safe and gentle alternative.
